Vignelli, Massimo

Massimo Vignelli (1931–2014) was an Italian modernist designer celebrated for transforming the New York City Subway's graphic design and wayfinding systems. In 1970, through his agency Unimark International, Vignelli developed the Graphics Standards Manual for the NYC Transit Authority. This introduced a cohesive signage system to allow millions of daily users to navigate the subway with ease, replacing decades of mismatched, confusing designs. In 1972, Vignelli designed his now-iconic subway map, which prioritized simplicity over geographic accuracy. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) notes that while the map was "initially panned by New Yorkers—it was replaced in 1979 by a more familiar topographic approach—today, the map is widely admired" for its modernist elegance. Today, the standardised design language for the Subway system created by Vignelli has become an instantly recognisable and enduring symbol of New York City.
