Hauer, Franz von

Franz von Hauer (1822–1899) was an Austrian geologist and cartographer who played a significant role in the geological mapping of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As the director of the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna, he oversaw the production of the first comprehensive geological map of the empire, known as the "Geologische Karte der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Monarchie." (Geological Map of Austro-Hungary), in twelve sheets (1867-1874). His work laid the foundation for modern geological cartography in the region and was instrumental in advancing the understanding of Central Europe's geology.
