Atlante novissimo
Antonio Zatta’s Atlante Novissimo, published in Venice in 1785, is one of the finest late 18th-century Italian atlases. It reflects the Enlightenment’s spirit of scientific inquiry and incorporates the latest geographical discoveries of the time, including recent explorations in the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific. Zatta, a prominent Venetian publisher and cartographer, oversaw the production of richly engraved and often delicately hand-coloured maps, notable for their elegant rococo cartouches and clarity of design. The atlas draws on sources from leading European geographers and is particularly admired for its updated mapping of North America, including early representations of the emerging United States, as well as detailed regional maps of Italy and other parts of Europe. Atlante Novissimo stands as a significant contribution to late Enlightenment cartography and remains highly prized by collectors for both its visual and historical value.
