Apples, strawberries, Chinese primrose and the squirting cucumber appear among Mary Ann Burnett's hand-coloured plates, in which plants are shown for their uses as well as their looks. A British botanical illustrator and editor who died in 1856, Burnett prepared Plantae Utiliores with contributions from her brother Gilbert. The plates here are catalogued in 1842 and range from familiar cultivated fruit to species valued in medicine, industry and everyday life, with the colouring bringing out the differences in flower, fruit and foliage that made each plant recognisable.
