Dragon trees and sacred figs, ostriches and chameleons: the prints by W. H. Freeman range across plants and animals drawn for French natural-history books. Freeman was the draughtsman, and other hands engraved his designs. The botanical plates come from Emmanuel Le Maout's Botanique Organographie et Taxonomie of 1852, with trees from conifers to palms. The animals, published in Le Buffon de la Jeunesse in 1873, run from pelican and peacock to giraffe, sheep and cattle, along with snakes, a turtle and a gavial.
