Village churches, priory ruins and the remains of Cumnor Hall make up these architectural engravings by the Oxford-born George Hollis (1793–1842). Apprenticed to George Cooke, he worked chiefly on topographical subjects and contributed to the Gentleman’s Magazine, the source of this group of impressions from the 1810s and 1820s. Cumnor church and hall appear alongside windows and a doorway moved from the hall to Wytham, and other plates show Iffley church, the bridge and abbey at Dorchester-on-Thames, the churches of Hodnet and Ombersley and the Greyfriars remains at Shrewsbury. Hollis signed some plates as draughtsman and engraver, others as engraver alone; Woodlands House at Mere is after a drawing by P. Crocker.
