Fritillaries, fuchsias and algae share the printed page with falcons, warblers, fishes, insects and reptiles in the work of Jacques Reyne Isidore Acarie-Baron, the French draughtsman and lithographer who worked in nineteenth-century scientific and illustrated publishing. The prints here date from 1833–1834 and come from an alphabetical natural-history dictionary, which brought together plants and animals whose names fell close to one another. Individual species portraits alternate with grouped subjects and comparative botanical diagrams that explain plant families through the structure of their flowers and petals.
