Wider roads, new routes out of London and safer surfaces are the concerns of these maps and diagrams associated with W. Rees Jeffreys (1872–1954), who campaigned for better roads and helped develop road classification and improvements for different road users. Presented to the Royal Commission on London Traffic and printed by Wyman and Sons for HMSO in its 1906 volume of maps and diagrams, they propose main roads out of London, a connection from the Strand to Crystal Palace and improvements towards Slough and Eltham. Photographs of the Uxbridge Road around Ealing and Hanwell record obstructions, tramways, horses and carts, macadam strips and road composition.
