Siam's swing festival, its ballet dancers and the capture of elephants appear in these photographic illustrations credited to R. Lenz, chosen to explain Siamese dress, ritual and spectacle to readers overseas. They reproduce work associated with Robert Lenz's Bangkok studio, which opened in the 1890s and continued to circulate photographs under its name. The plates were used in Walter Hutchinson's Customs of the World, a publication that library catalogues place around 1913. Courtly and public performance sit beside elephant-catching away from the palace, and a royal lying-in-state and cremation add a solemn ceremonial strand.
