Salmon, trout, charr and pike, and plates of birds' eggs from owls to waders, make up these prints by Alexander Francis Lydon (1836–1917), the illustrator and engraver associated with Benjamin Fawcett's colour printing. Lydon worked on landscapes and architecture as well as natural history, and the prints here, dated 1879–1901, concentrate on his plates for William Houghton's British Fresh-Water Fishes and on ornithology. Carp and smaller river fishes join the game fish, some under named regional forms that reflect nineteenth-century classification, and the egg plates group species from eagles to waterfowl and woodland birds. The designs and engraved blocks were produced separately from the scientific descriptions, which were written by others.
