Read moreDerbyshire churches, Matlock High Tor and the cotton mills at Hanging Bridge are among James Peller Malcolm's copperplate illustrations for the Gentleman's Magazine in the 1790s and early 1800s. Born in Philadelphia and active in Britain, Malcolm (1767–1815) was an engraver and antiquarian writer. His Derbyshire plates record Ashover, Shirland, Eckington, Chesterfield with its monuments, and Duffield Bridge; London subjects include St John-at-Hackney and the House of Correction at Coldbath Fields. Further churches at Chilton, Mansfield and Shrewsbury, and a plate of church windows, show his eye for antiquarian detail.
