Greenland’s glaciers, Mount Shasta and the harbour at Valparaíso show the sweep of C. Maynard’s American illustrations for Élisée Reclus’s Universal Geography, reproduced in the English edition published by J. S. Virtue in the later nineteenth century. Mountain and river scenery is strong, with Mount Hood, the Green River canyon and the Sermitsialik glacier, alongside New Orleans from its levee, Belém from the river and Valparaíso from the sea. Argentine gauchos and a Chilean marketplace add everyday life, and a study of the ceiba tree, credited jointly to Maynard and Paul Langlois, turns to tropical vegetation.
