New & Elegant General Atlas
A New and Elegant General Atlas: Comprising All the New Discoveries, to the Present Time, published in Boston in May 1812 by Thomas & Andrews of 45 Newbury Street, is a finely produced early American atlas reflecting the expanding geographical knowledge of the early 19th century. It contains sixty-three maps, drawn by leading cartographers Aaron Arrowsmith (British) and Samuel Lewis (American), and engraved to a high standard. The atlas includes detailed representations of the United States, with particular attention to new western territories, as well as updated maps of the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, incorporating recent discoveries and political changes. Blending British cartographic precision with American publishing ambition, this edition stands as an important example of early national-era mapmaking.
