These maps by Rowland Nicholas show the post-war Manchester region as its City Surveyor and Engineer hoped to remake it, in reconstruction proposals published in 1945. They come from the Manchester and District Regional Planning Committee's report on tentative regional planning proposals, which crossed municipal boundaries; a map of the constituent authorities sets out its territory. Existing railways, industrial areas and traffic densities provide the evidence, and plans for new ring and arterial roads, industrial zoning and green belts the answer, with peak-hour traffic projected forward to 1970. They are distinct from the architectural schemes of his separate City of Manchester Plan.
