Michelangelo's Moses, a Sistine Sibyl and the paintings of the catacombs are among the masterpieces J. Petot drew for Francis Wey's Rome, reproducing the city's classical and Christian art in wood engraving. The book was published by Chapman and Hall with an introduction by W. W. Story, and its credits name Petot as draughtsman and craftsmen such as Bertrand as engravers. Classical works include a faun associated with Praxiteles, the Nile sculpture, the Belvedere torso and ancient portrait sculpture, while Christian art runs from the Catacombs of Callixtus to the mosaic of Santa Pudenziana and Maderno's St Cecilia. The Vatican's Gallery of the Candelabra appears too, and an Indian temple relief takes Petot beyond Rome.
