The Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps and the streets of Pompeii share the pages of prints by Alberto Pisa (1864–1936), the Italian painter and book illustrator. Born in Ferrara and trained in Florence, he worked in watercolour and other media, often painting buildings, gardens and landscapes, and the illustrations here date from 1905 to 1910. Aqueducts, churches and cloisters share the Roman sequence with suburban houses and the Campagna, while the Pompeian views follow temples, baths, houses, gateways and the Street of Tombs beneath Vesuvius, with seasonal light and gardens softening the stone.
