Fresh from the field, the maps from the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society set down the routes, rivers and ruins that travellers and surveyors reported between 1879 and 1883. Associated with the Society's journal and with Edward Stanford's London publishing work, they were made to accompany individual papers, so a route map might illustrate an expedition narrative while a river sketch or a plan of ruins supplied the detail a particular report required. The coverage is accordingly wide: East African routes between Dar es Salaam and Lake Nyassa, the lower Sabi River, northern Canadian territory and archaeological sites in Guatemala.
