Racinet, Albert Charles Auguste

Albert Charles Auguste Racinet (1825–1893) was a French illustrator, antiquarian, and historian best known for his monumental work L'Ornement Polychrome, published in two volumes between 1869 and 1888. This lavishly illustrated compendium presents a richly detailed visual survey of ornamental styles from ancient to modern times, drawing on decorative arts, architecture, textiles, and ceramics from diverse cultures and historical periods. Racinet’s chromolithographic plates—renowned for their precision and colour fidelity—made the work a landmark in design publishing and an enduring reference for artists, designers, and historians interested in global ornamentation.
