Harbour entrances, coastal weather and working boats give prints by Maurice Randall their seaward eye. Randall illustrated Clive Holland's From the North Foreland to Penzance, published in 1908, and these colour views follow that journey along England's south coast, from Dover's outward mail and the naval water at Portsmouth to fishing off Exmouth and the creeks of Devon and Cornwall. Quiet scenes at Helford, Fowey and Kingsbridge alternate with rough seas off the Lizard and Land's End, and the Needles and coastal lighthouses supply landmarks known to mariners and visitors alike. Again and again he looks out towards a harbour mouth, a quay or open water rather than into the town.
