The crooked streets and grand buildings of old continental towns fill these lithographs by Samuel Prout (1783–1852), the British watercolour painter who brought his travel sketches to a wider public on stone. They date from the early 1830s and are associated with his Facsimiles of Sketches Made in Flanders and Germany and Drawn on Stone. Regensburg, Cologne and Dresden, with its Zwinger, are among the German subjects, and the Kraanstraat in Mechelen shows a Flemish street, the lithographic line keeping the character of a drawing.
