Stow's survey of London

John Stow’s Survey of London, first published in 1598, is the earliest detailed account of the city's history, topography, and governance. The most significant edition appeared in 1720, heavily revised and expanded by John Strype, and titled A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster.... This edition was the first to include engraved ward maps and views, transforming the work into a richly illustrated record of early 18th-century London. Strype’s edition remains the most important and collectible version of Stow’s landmark survey.
