Bristol's Exchange, its medieval churches and vanished waterfront landmarks such as the High Cross and the old Bristol Bridge fill the plates of The History and Antiquities of the City of Bristol, William Barrett's local history of 1789, printed by William Pine and illustrated with copperplate engravings. The plates use elevations, monuments, prospects and plans, showing the Exchange from several sides in relation to Corn Street and the market, along with St Mary Redcliffe, the cathedral and surviving religious foundations. Merchants' buildings and working structures beside the Avon also appear, and maps associated with Richard Benning and John Speed show earlier outlines of the city.
