Essex churches, country houses and river ports fill these prints from The Picturesque Beauties of Great Britain, engraved after William Henry Bartlett to accompany Thomas Wright's county history and printed by C. Baynes for George Virtue in London in the 1830s. Colchester's St Botolph's Priory, Waltham Abbey and the harbour at Harwich show the county at its most varied, from ruined religious buildings to coastal trade, and estate views of Highlands and Hill Hall add houses and parkland. Small figures, animals and carts set the buildings in a working rural landscape.
