United States Coast & Geodetic Survey

The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey (USCGS), established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast, is the oldest US Scientific organisation in existence. It was renamed Coast Survey in 1836, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1878, and in 1970 it became part of the NOAA as the National Geodetic Survey. It was originally tasked with surveying the U.S. coastline to create nautical charts of the coast to increase maritime safety. As the nation expanded westward, it undertook trigonometric surveys of the interior. Its responsibilities also include hydrography, geodesy, astronomy, topography, oceanography, tide and current measurement and seismology. We stock below a selection of late 19th century USCGS sea charts & marine charts, tidal and trignometrical surveys.
