Cape Town's mountains, gardens and moonlit ramparts fill these prints by William Westhofen, also recorded as Wilhelm Westhofen, who combined a technical career with painting and lived from 1842 to 1925. They come from his illustrations for Réné Juta's The Cape Peninsula, published in 1910. Table Bay, Lion's Head, False Bay and Simon's Town give the wide views, while hydrangeas at Groote Schuur, the avenue at Alphen and the old castle's ramparts by moonlight show his eye for vegetation and atmosphere, the perspective of a resident choosing familiar places.
