The Rhine, from its cathedral cities to the falls at Schaffhausen, runs through these prints issued by the London publisher William Mackenzie. Dated between 1860 and 1875, they show Speyer, Mannheim, Mainz, Oppenheim, Worms and Andernach, and further upstream Rheinfelden, Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls. Town fronts, rafts and fishing make the river a living subject, and credits associated with Birket Foster and David Roberts link the plates with Victorian illustrated travel books. Mackenzie's name is that of the imprint, not of the artist.
