'Soviet Russia in Asia' by John Bartholomew (1924). Vintage colour map; Scale 1:25,800,000, 22.0 x 33.5cm, 8.75 x 13.25 inches

CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Soviet Russia in Asia'

This fascinating map shows post-revolution Soviet Russia as it was between 1918 and 1922. On 10 July 1918 the Russian Constitution of 1918 renamed the country the Russian Socialist Federated Soviet Republic, by which title it is named in the map. By 1918, during the Russian Civil War, several states within the former Russian Empire seceded, reducing the size of the country. On 30 December 1922, the First Congress of the Soviets of the USSR approved the Treaty on the Creation of the USSR, by which Russia was united with the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, and Transcaucasian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic into a single federal state, the Soviet Union. The map shows as "independent republics" Khiva & Bukhara. A number of regions are shown as "Autonomous" (the purple areas on the map), including Yakutsk, Buryat & Oyrat, while the Republics of Turkistan and Kirghiz are shown as Autonomous within Soviet Russia. The map also shows the Far Eastern Republic (Russian: Дальневосто́чная Респу́блика, ДВР, tr. Dalnevostochnaya Respublika, DVR), sometimes called the Chita Republic. This state, which existed from April 1920 to November 1922 in the easternmost part of the Russian Far East was nominally independent, although it was largely controlled by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and its main purpose was to be a buffer state between the RSFSR and the territories occupied by Japan during the Russian Civil War. The Far Eastern Republic occupied the territory of modern Zabaykalsky Krai, Amur Oblast, Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai, and Primorsky Krai of Russia (the former Transbaikal and Amur oblasts and Primorsky krai). After the fall of Vladivostok on 25 October 1922, the civil war was officially declared over. Three weeks later, on 15 November 1922, the Far Eastern Republic was merged with the RSFSR.
