Morse, Jedidiah

The Reverend Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826) was an American cartographer and geographer whose textbooks, including "The American universal geography" (From 1793), "The American Gazetteer" (1797), and "A New Universal Gazetteer" (several editions), became widely used by students in the United States earning him the sobriquet "the father of American geography". He was the father of the telegraphy pioneer Samuel Morse, inventor of the Morse code.
