International Geological Congress

The International Geological Congress (IGC) has played a pivotal role in advancing geological science and mapping. The IGC is not primarily a map-producing entity, but it has been instrumental in promoting the creation of large-scale international geological maps (some of which have been puboished under its auspices), standardizing geological cartography, and facilitating the international collaboration required. Such maps include the International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas (IGME), a project originally commenced in the 1920s, and more recently the International Geological Map of the World (IGMW), a project begun in the mid 20th century.
