Beyschlag, Franz Heinrich August

Franz Heinrich August Beyschlag (1853-1935) was a professor of geology at the Bergakademie Berlin and President of the Prussian Geological Institute, and one of the most important geological cartographers of his time. As Chairman of the Prussian Geological Institute in the early 20th century he produced his most important work, the map of usable deposits in Germany, in response to the Government requirement for an accurate inventory of raw materials deposits to meet the needs of the heavy industry and the armaments industry. Between 1991 and 1913 he also executed a 49 sheet geological map of Europe whose creation had been commissioned at the Second International Geological Congress in 1881 in Bologna - at which a common terminology for Geologicsal mapping was established.
