CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Map of Wessex of the Novels and Poems'

An attractive compact map of Thomas Hardy's Wessex, the fictional literary landscape created by the author as the setting for his major novels, in the south and southwest of England. Much like the novels, the map blends fiction and reality - underscored by his description of Wessex as "a merely realistic dream country". Although the places featured in Hardy’s novels are based on real locations, he often gave them fictional names. For instance, his hometown of Dorchester is famously renamed Casterbridge in his books, most notably in The Mayor of Casterbridge. On the map, fictional place names are indicated in italics, while real-world locations appear in standard text. Hardy named the region "Wessex" after the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom that existed in this part of that country prior to the unification of England by Æthelstan; his resurrection of the name "Wessex" is largely responsible for reintroducing the term into popular modern usage. The map features charming pictorial and decorative flourishes, including a compass rose, masted sailing ships, a whale and other sea creatures.
