Shope, Irvin

Irvin "Shorty" Shope (1900–1977) was an artist, cartographer and cowboy who was born and died in Helena, Montana. His work vividly captured the Old West of the Pioneer Era. A member of the Cowboy Artists of America, Shope's cartographic work is notable for combining detailed mapping with pictorial storytelling. His best-known map covers the Western United States from Saint Louis to the Pacific, charting 14 major pioneer trails to the west coast including the Oregon, Santa Fe, and Pony Express routes. Richly annotated with historical notes and vignettes, his maps often feature 19th century scenes such as Fort Laramie with wagon trains, Native American encampments, and river rafts. Shope’s signature is frequently accompanied by the circle and arrow brand of his father's Montana ranch. His maps blend historical accuracy with artistic charm, preserving the legends of the Old West.
