CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Pavilion - Ground Plan - John Nash Esq.'

Shortly before his accession as George IV in 1820, the then Prince Regent commissioned John Nash to publish a deluxe guide to the Brighton Royal Pavilion, the new Royal Palace. which was then nearing completion. The guide was intended as a souvenir for illustrious guests. The work is scarce; according to Brunet, only 250 copies were printed. The work consists of a calligraphic etched title plate, a lithographic "Index of Subjects," and two series of plates: a set of coloured aquatints, printed in colour and finished by hand to closely resemble the original drawings, and a set of outline-etched proofs, some printed on Japan paper, before the addition of aquatint shading. The illustrations were executed by Augustus Pugin, a pupil of Nash, and others.
