The 1961 Tour de France covered 4,397 km over 21 stages, marking the second of Jacques Anquetil’s five overall victories, and his first since 1957. The race began in Rouen, Anquetil’s hometown, and featured several challenging mountain stages in the Pyrenees and Alps, with the Col du Tourmalet and Col d’Izoard among the key climbs. Anquetil dominated the time trials, which played a crucial role in his overall win. Italian Guido Carlesi finished in second place, while Luxembourg rider Charly Gaul claimed third. The points classification was won by Frenchman André Darrigade, while Imerio Massignan of Italy claimed the mountains classification. This edition of the Tour is remembered for Anquetil’s clinical precision, strong team support, and his emergence as a dominant force in cycling. The route of the Tour de l'Avenir is also highlighted on the map.
