Smith, Hubert Llewellyn

Sir Hubert Llewellyn Smith (1864-1945) was a British civil servant who served as permanent secretary to the Board of Trade, where he played an important role in the Liberal government's welfare reforms and later as chief economic advisor to the government. As the Director of the "New Survey of London Life and Labour", published 1931 by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Smith updated Charles Booth's "Life and Labour of the People in London", including the famous Poverty Maps. Forty years earlier, Smith had acted as an assistant during Booth's original Inquiry. The Charles Booth archive, inscribed into the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register in 2016, is held at the LSE.
