CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Mahalangur Himal - Chomolongma - Mount Everest'

A fine example of Schneider's important topographic map of Everest. Published at 1:25000 with a 20 meter contour interval, it was the first map the first map to show the entire Mount Everest-Khumbu region at such large scale, which allowed detail not previously seen on maps of the area. As noted on the map, the triangulation and terrestrial photogrammetry fieldwork, and subsequent analysis, was conducted by the mountaineer and cartograper Erwin Schneider during the 1955 International Himalaya Expedition. It was described in the "History of Cartography" as "a masterpiece of reconnaissance surveying". The detail made possible by Schneider’s careful ground survey and the artistry of Fritz Ebster, who turned field sketches into the relief-like reproduction of bedrock, moraines, and glaciers, is commendable. Many experts consider Schneider's maps to be unrivalled in the world in their depiction of extreme high mountain landscapes.
