CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'The "District" Map of Greater London and Environs'

1902 District Railway Map of Greater London and Environs. From 1874, the District Line began issuing its own branded maps, known as the Improved District Railway Map of London. These large-format pamphlet maps became more readable with improved colour printing and a focus on Underground lines. As the District expanded beyond Central London, a larger companion map was published (of which this is the first 1902 edition) covering Greater London, extending from Windsor to Northfleet. District Railway lines were highlighted in bold red, with solid lines for operational routes and dotted lines for those under construction. Hounslow Barracks (now Hounslow West) marked the western limit of District services, while routes to Wimbledon, Richmond, New Cross, and East Ham were also shown. District station names appeared in large red letters, with a simplified base map featuring uncoloured roads and lightly shaded parks. A folding map, dissected and laid on linen, with illustrated covers. This 1902 edition is notable for featuring the westward extension of the District Railway to Hounslow and Uxbridge (opened 1904); this section and the branch to Hounslow now form part of the Piccadilly line.
