CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: Outline of BTH [British Thomson-Houston Company] Locomotive & Loading Gauge

An original blueprint for a Metropolitan Railway British Thomson-Houston Company (BTH) locomotive. BTH was a major supplier of electrical equipment and systems for railways in the early 20th century. These locomotives were part of the Metropolitan Railway’s efforts to electrify its lines and replace steam traction with electric traction to improve efficiency and reduce smoke in the tunnels. By 1914, the Metropolitan Railway had begun electrifying parts of its network, primarily in response to issues with steam locomotive operations in tunnels. The electrification system chosen used 4-rail DC technology, where one rail carried the positive current and another carried the negative return. BTH supplied electric locomotives designed to operate under these conditions. The introduction of BTH locomotives was a significant technological advancement for the Metropolitan Railway, helping it transition into one of the earliest electrified urban railways, which eventually became part of the London Underground network.
