'Being a map of Hollywood, from the best surveys of the time' by Harold Walter Grieve (1926 (1960s)). Whimsical bird's eye view of Hollywood and vicinity, 60.5 x 85.0cm, 23.75 x 33.25 inches

CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Being a map of Hollywood, from the best surveys of the time'

A 1960s reprint of Harold Grieve's whimsical bird's-eye plan of Hollywood, originally published in 1926. The attributed notes that this example was scanned by Heinz-Weber Inc., a process invented by the company in about 1965. The plan is centered on Hollywood Boulevard and extends to Santa Monica, Culver City, Laurel Canyon, and Edendale. The map claims (tongue in cheek), to be drawn "from the best surveys of the time," but it was certainly not drawn to scale, as it skips the 10 miles between Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, as noted on the map. The map focuses on the movie industry with the locations of movie studios located throughout. Edendale was formerly the home of major movie studios, and is now known as the neighborhoods of Echo Park, Los Feliz and Silver Lake. Key streets are named, including Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, and Santa Monica Boulevard. The mansions of Tinseltown's actors, producers, and directors are also identified. There are text bubbles emanating from buildings throughout the plan of overheard Hollywood cliches such as "The director spoiled my story", "The story was terrible but I fixed it" and "yes, make that swimming pool larger". The Hollywoodland sign, as originally erected in 1923 and only later shortened to "Hollywood" is shown. The border is filled with film strips, including one being cut by a large pair of scissors labeled "censors," and typical scenes from a 1920s Western movie at bottom. Harold Grieve was movie costume designer, art and technical director. He later worked as an interior designer to the Hollywood A-List, including George Burns, Walt Disney, Mary Pickford, Cecil B. DeMille and Bing Crosby.
