'London Town - Travel by Train' by Kerry Lee (c1953). 20th century colour pictorial map, 94.0 x 116.0cm, 37 x 45.5 inches

CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'London Town - Travel by Train'

A coloured lithograph whimsical pictorial map of central London, with a decorative border. A new edition issued after World War II, with changes and updates made to the original 1938 version, by artist Kerry Lee. Undated, published circa 1953. Text in the bottom margin reads "This map is based on a pre-war issue and as far as is practicable the more important details have been brought up to date", the British Railways Totem logo is used (this was later replaced with the more familiar double arrow logo from about 1964). A reference is made to the British Railways Travel centre on Lower Regent Street, which appears to have opened c.1950. The Royal Festival Hall is shown (opened 1951). The map features prominent landmarks, place names, streets and parks. Illustrated with humorous cartoons peopled with local and historical characters and tourist attractions. As usual, the artist has depicted himself at work, at bottom right. The border has the coats of arms of each London borough, and cartoon historical figures associated with different parts of London, for example Sherlock Holmes next to Marylebone. At the bottom is an illustration of the 1953 Coronation procession of Queen Elizabeth the Second, with the Gold State Coach. A decorative compass rose in a box with yellow background at the bottom left.
