CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'View of Roehampton, in Surrey'

It's not entirely clear what this view of "Roehampton" shows, since Roehampton is not on the River Thames, which dominates this view. Given the curvature of the river and the topography, we think that the vew is taken from the west bank of the Thames in Kew looking south east. We think the viewpoint is approximately where the National Archives are now located, roughly opposite St Pauls Church Grove Park, Chiswick on the other side of the river, which we think is the church shown on the left hand side of the view. We think the village on the same side of the river from which the view is taken, ie. to the right of the picture, is Mortlake (with the steeple of St Mary the Virgin Mortlake visible). We think Roehampton is the hamlet shown on the higher ground in the distance.

Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes.
