Arden-Close, Charles Frederick

Colonel Sir Charles Frederick Arden-Close (1865 – 1952) was a British geographer and surveyor. In 1889 he was posted to the Survey of India, and later to Nigeria, and after appointment to the Ordnance Survey in other parts of central, eastern and southern Africa. His Book of Topographical and Geographical Surveying, published in 1905, became the standard textbook on the subject. He served as Director General of the Ordnance Survey between 1911 to 1922, where he introduced more rigorous scientific methods, and proceeded with a second geodetic levelling of the United Kingdom. He pioneered the production of one inch per mile scale maps of revolutionary appearance which used colour printing and precise printing methods, and which established the standard for subsequent one-inch series. We have a stock of 1917 Boundary Commission maps of Great Britain, attributed to him.
