Bollmann, Hermann

Hermann Bollmann (1911-1971) founded the cartographic publishing house Bollmann-Bildkarten-Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, in Braunschweig, Germany in 1948, specialising in three dimensional "bird's eye view" city tourist plans on an axonometric view, ie without perspective. Bollmann had been responsible for creating troop maps in the so-called "military perspective" for the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front during the Second World War, a technique which he developed into his so called "helicopter views" of towns and cities. His technique developed the traditional German cartographic art form known as Vogelschaukarten, which had originated in the 15th century and become popular in the 19th century; Bollmann's maps were the first of this type to be produced since the 1860s. He produced a number of plans of German cities, Amsterdam and Jerusalem in the 1950s and 1960s, culminating in his plan of midtown Manhattan for the 1964 New York World's Fair.
