Bullock, Leslie George

Leslie George Bullock (1895–1971) was a celebrated British illustrator and cartographer renowned for his decorative and engaging pictorial maps. He began his career as a civil servant (he received an O.B.E. in 1947 for his Civil Defense contributions during World War Two), before turning his artistic talents to cartography. As Edinburgh publisher John Bartholomew & Son's leading designer of decorative and historical maps, Bullock's cartographic output blended historical accuracy with whimsical illustrations, designed to engage the general public. His most famous work, The Children’s Map of London (1938), raised funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital and remained in print for decades. Other notable works include maps of Glasgow, Bath, and the United Nations. Bullock’s maps often quoted classic texts in his designs. Retiring to Kent, he continued creating maps until his passing in 1971.
