Capellini, Giovanni

Giovanni Capellini (1833-1922) was an Italian geologist and paleontologist. He is considered one of the founding figures of Italian geology. Cappellini played a prominent role in the establishment and leadership of the Regio Comitato Geologico d'Italia (Royal Geological Committee) in 1867, the national body responsible for overseeing geological research and mapping, under whose auspices he initiated the Geological Map of Italy project. From 1883 he was frequently President of the Italian Geological Society. He was born in La Spezia.
