Clark, Estra

Estra Clark (1904-1993), née Estra Walker, was an English schoolteacher, illustrator and pictorial mapmaker from York. Her artistic talent emerged early; she was commended in a national competition at 15. She trained at the York School of Arts and Crafts. Her first map, a painted depiction of Ryedale created in 1935, was recently rediscovered. Between 1947 and 1959, she created five further maps: Historic York (1947), A Map of Yorkshire (1949), Historic Canterbury (1952), Historic Jersey (1957), and an Old Testament Map (1959). Her works were commissioned by clients including British Railways and the Methodist Church.
