Garbutt, Paul

Paul E Garbutt (1919-2008) was an influential underground railway planner for London Transport from the 1950's to the 1970's. He developed the iconic London Underground tube maps and Diagrams of Lines, which had been originated by Harry Beck, during the 1960's. He was involved in the planning for the Victoria Line, Jubilee line, and the Heathrow extension of the Piccadilly line. The ideas he introduced to the London tube have been adopted by metro systems around the world. He responded to criticism of an unpopular, angular style of Underground map by drawing a new version, restoring the map's elegant curves; he can therefore be said to be one of the few people who have altered the course of the Thames.
