Geological Society

Founded in 1807, the Geological Society of London has been pivotal in advancing geological research and mapping, and aiding understanding of formations and resources. Early maps, critical to the Industrial Revolution, supported mining, infrastructure, and land use. The Society’s early cartographic output included William Smith's 1815 "Map that Changed the World," which set standards in stratigraphy and thematic cartography. Over time, the Society has produced many regional and thematic maps, providing detailed insights into rock formations, fault lines, and mineral distributions.
