Harmer, Frederic William

Frederic William Harmer (1835-1923) was a distinguished British amateur geologist and cartographer known for his contributions to understanding the Quaternary period and the glacial history of East Anglia. His maps significantly advanced the geological mapping of the region and made important contributions to the cartographic representation of glacial and post-glacial landscapes in the UK. His map with Searles Valentine Wood the younger (1830-1884) of the glacial deposits of Norfolk and Suffolk was the first "drift" map of its kind in the world; also noteworthy is his map of boulder clay and trails of glacial erratics in England and Wales.
