CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Allemagne'

This large, colourful wall map illustrates the emerging post-World War II political landscape of Europe, focusing on Germany's territorial and administrative divisions, the 1937 borders, and the post-war changes that ensued. Colour coding distinguishes between the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), the Soviet Occupation Zone (East Germany), and the German regions east of the Oder-Neisse Line, which were assigned to Poland and the Soviet Union by the Potsdam Conference for "temporary administration" pending a final peace treaty. The Allied zones of occupation in West Germany were dissolved upon the establishment of the Federal Republic following elections in 1949. Berlin is prominently marked, still divided into four sectors controlled by American, British, French, and Soviet authorities. Demarcation lines, including the Oder-Neisse Line, emphasize significant post-war territorial adjustments. Insets include a detailed map of Berlin and a broader European view of Germany's location, while coats of arms along the map's border represent the various German federal states. The Polish-administered "Recovered Territories" included Silesia, Pomerania, and parts of East Prussia. At the time, their status was provisional, as outlined in the Potsdam Agreement, and they were seen as compensation for Poland’s loss of its eastern lands, which had been annexed by the Soviet Union (modern-day western Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania). This realignment prompted extensive population transfers, with millions of Germans expelled and replaced by Polish settlers, many of whom had themselves been displaced from the Soviet-annexed territories. This upheaval reshaped the ethnic and cultural composition of the region. The temporary status of the Recovered Territories was not formally resolved until the signing of the Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany in 1990 (commonly known as the Two Plus Four Agreement), which confirmed the Oder-Neisse Line as Germany's eastern border, confirmed Polish sovereignty over these territories, and brought an end to decades of uncertainty regarding their status.
